Chapter Fourteen
Dakar slowly stroked Sy’s hair as they curled up together on Sy’s giant bed. His body was sated, the smell of their sex was still in the air. The fire in the grate crackled and spit, the flames the only light in the room. On any other night, Dakar would already be snoring. But the events of the day wouldn’t leave his head alone.
“What’s wrong?” Sy turned in his arms, peering up at him. His gray eyes sparkling from the firelight. “Are you still upset with me about earlier?”
“Not with you as such, no.” Dakar smiled ruefully at his cherished mate. “I promise you, I’d never love on your body for hours if my heart was still angry at you. That would be wrong and a betrayal of trust.”
“Then what is it?” Sy’s hand was warm on his bare chest. “How can I help?”
Dakar huffed out a long breath. “I’m not sure you can help and what worries me is I’ll upset you simply trying to explain what’s going on in my head.”
“I’d be the first person to admit I am hopeless at social cues and nuances and often tend to consider the worst in what someone is saying without hearing them out or understanding context.” Sy snuggled his head under Dakar’s chin. “Would it help if I promise to listen and give you a chance to explain, rather than jump to conclusions prematurely?”
“You’re assuming I can explain in a way that makes sense,” Dakar chuckled. “Look, I admit I let my instincts get away from me before the guards arrived. I resorted to name calling, and no matter how you look at it, that was wrong of me. It’s…that’s not like me at all and I have no excuse for it. I’m really sorry.”
“Your choice of wording was unfortunate. I have an issue with someone considering anything I say or do insane and don’t think that word should apply to anyone.” Dakar didn’t need to see Sy’s face to know his mate was uncomfortable. “Too often, people in my life have questioned my sanity. Long ago, when my father retired, and word spread among magical communities that I was the new Necromancer, magic users from all over came to town, trying to take over my territory. If they couldn’t win by magical means, they tried to forge marital alliances with me. They would invite me out, throw parties for me and things like that and didn’t take it very well when I refused to attend. Apparently, a hermit-like existence is considered a sign of mental illness.”
“Oh, hon,” Dakar pushed his jealousy down at the thought of sexy young magic users trying to sway Sy with their charms. “They just didn’t understand you. Is that why you’re so upset with your father arranging this alliance for you?”
“No. I’m upset with my father because he doesn’t listen to me. Lady Rochelle is cut from the same cloth. You watch. This situation is far from over. If there’s one thing you can count on with a magic user, they can hold a grudge for decades.
